[TheForge] Titanic - low quality wrought iron rivets

I didn't mean for my comments to come across quite so strong -- I was just
being hard on the NYT authors.
You can get just about any form of iron based "steel" you want out of a BOF,
Electric Arc, Vacuum Electric Arc, Ladle Steel, ESR (Electric Slag Remelt)
process you want today. (Some super alloys are powder based).
Still a very interesting article. The "rivet" was the death of ship
building in the UK and Ireland. At one time 60 percent of the worlds ships
were built on the Clyde in Scotland. It is a most interesting history. The
death of that industry was base on the failure to move to welding as a ship
building "method". The failure was one of both management and labor but I
put the biggest blame on management -- they where taking the big "pounds" so
to speak and they should have done a better job of changing with the
movement of technology. Even today the Clyde is a wonderful place to visit
if you are interested in the history of iron, steel and ship building. At
one time "Clyde Built" was the way to say quality ship building.
