I think it was a fella called O'Dell at the SERC years ago,
demonstrating metal spinning. Someone asked him how long it took him to
learn. He said about a ton. It's not the time, so much as the time
learning. You will have to burn a few hundred pounds of sticks (in a
quality manner) in order to learn the skill.
I've been hammering off and on for over 20 years. Until lately, more
off than on. This isn't really 20 years experience. But in my
demonstrations I say this with the hidden emphases on the 20 years. If
someone is astute and asks further, I will elaborate<G>.
Then again, one blacksmith I know said that he called himself a Master
Blacksmith because he could command higher prices. His work was good
enough, just he didn't have the documentation to back it<G>.
Last lesson for the day, practice makes permanent. If you learn how to
do it wrong, and practice, you will learn to do it perfectly, wrong.
All the Best
Most of this is fun. And enough fun that it makes up for the (&@#$
days<G>. Keep going!!

Not to be too facetious, but Kevin you might consider taking a
"drawing" course at your local community collage and Ben, you might
consider taking a "welding" course at the local trade school. You will
learn much more (as it relates to blacksmithing) and it won't cost as
much as new software or a new computer. I work in a machine /
fabrication shop and work from cad drawings all day. Most of them are
sadly lacking. Learn to draw good "isometric" views by hand and convey
MUCH more information and have a better understanding of the piece
that you are working with. And Ben, if you can weld at all, you only
need tons (hours) of practice. Many trade (vocational) schools offer
night courses.
