That is how it is done.  The foot thingie works on ac/dc motors quite
well.  Ac/dc motors have brushes.  Other motors aren't happy with that
arrangement usually.  Try to match the foot pedal in power to the new
motor.  Otherwise you will have limited control and/or burn out the
pedal.
