Bruce:   The 300 series of stainless alloys are Austenitic....they do not
form sufficient Martensite at room temperature for cutting edge purposes, or
long-service springs, I suspect.  Grant

I take it that 316 can't be hardened by heating and
quenching, as one does for carbon steel?

I have some 316 that is dimensionally suitable, but I
don't think it was cold worked.  I wonder whether I
could work harden this somehow.

Frosty - Didn't you tell us a story one time about
metals hardening during transport ... or in front of
loudspeakers?
