It might help if your doctor told the VA that your injury might be 
connected
with your service but in any case the VA will check you out on their
own. If you have documentation of your original injury while you
were in the service you have a chance of getting help. Go to your
County VA rep and tell him you want to file a claim. It's your choice
not his. Good luck.
