This class might be of interest to those of you over on the Left Coast:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a class being offered by Sierra Forge and Fire Dec. 7-9 being
taught by Don Fogg. The description is as follows:
"Making knives the old-timey way with fire and hammer, files and
paper, you will learn the basics of knifemaking in this weekend class.
Working with simple hand tools, you can make a knife that will give
you a lifetime of satisfaction. It is a great introduction to the
craft of bladesmithing.
cost $395"
I know that this sounds really basic, but my experience with these
classes has been that doing the basics with a mastersmith looking over
your shoulder really helps with your technique as they can help iron
out those little glitches, and help further refine your technique.
And as anyone who has seen Don Fogg work a hammer can attest to, he
likes to forge as close to shape as possible. I know my hammer work
isn't anywhere near as good as his (maybe some of it will rub off on
me :)
The really small class size generally lets the instruction be more
custom tailored to individual skill level anyways, I'm sure most could
benefit from learning from Don.
Sierra Forge and Fire is in Exeter CA (about 3.5 hours north
of Los Angeles and 3.5 hours south of San Francisco). Pass along to
all interested parties.
And to those on the blacksmithing forum (which I'm not). They're also
having Tsur Sadan come over from Israel for some classes. My
understanding is that he's a blacksmithing wonder. You'll have to
check the website for class descriptions etc... (www.forgeandfire.com)
