Buffalo made a good drill press. Walker Turner too. I have a Hamilton
sensitive drill from 1942 - probably weighs more than most floor models
and it's only about 14" tall.
My recommendation would be to find a 1940s or 50s vintage machine in
good condition and pay the money. Even if you paid nearly as much for
it as a new one, you will have made a good purchase. Unless you are
going to shell out the $$ for a top-line machine of current vintage,
your money is far better spent in the old hardware.

My sentiments exactlly. I would rather get a quality piece of old equipment
than a new one.
My drill press is actually an old factory drill station, 4 drill presses
mounted to a heavy steel table. It was 3 phase when I got it and I have only
converted two of the heads to single phase. It is really nice to be able to
keep a champhering bit in one all the time for clean up, or be able to have
two different sizes of drills for a complex operation. One of the presses
has a tap head that I have never used since it came 3-ph and only has one
collet.
