Here is a shot of a power hammer brake onna 100lb hammer.

The brake band is a stainless strip of 16g w/leather belting copper  
riveted to it.  Not shown is a pivot on the opposite side.  The  
spring tension is adjustable and the brake is linked to the foot  
control, apply 'foot' and the brake eases....1 lick or a bunch is up  
to the user.
