BEER MUG STAINS!!?! Why on earth would you use beer mug stains? Surely
none of you gents partake of beer. Well, I bet some of you don't anyway :o)
I have to for medicinal reasons almost on a daily basis.
heh heh.

I like to consider how the piece I am "aging" would age naturally in use.
So, areas that would be worn smooth by use (handles, chair seats, knobs,
etc.) I sand/buff as smooth as possible. Areas that are subject to dings
and dents (table tops, chair legs, etc.) I might treat lightly with a chain,
etc. Areas that are subject to accumulation of dirt I might stain darker.
Selective charring, ink stains, beer mug rings, etc. can be added sparingly.
I think the biggest mistake people make in artificial aging is failing to
think about how similar object age naturally in use. Some parts of a tool
handle may get dark and smooth with use while other areas of the same handle
might get dented or charred. (Look at all the hammer handles in your shop.)
It can definitely be over-done.

Aubrey

To rough wood up, make a shaker table and put the wood
in it with ball bearings or with aquarium gravel, you
can be creative with the medium.
