And the misused word that bothers me most is "helmet" when used as a
substitute for "shield". Even the manufacturers of these devices now
call them "welding helmets". Everyone knows that a "helmet" goes on
one's head to protect it from blows. A "shield" is used to block light
and heat from one's face. A "helmet" will also block light and heat,
but it is very hard to see your welding puddle through a "helmet".
Likewise, a "welding shield" is not very effective in protecting one's
head from falling wrenches.
