If you have 3 or more batteries and jumper cables you really do not need to buy
anything else except welding rod. Wire the batteries in series. Add a stick and
WaLa you can weld, aint pretty; aint precise; but if you are looking just to get
youself out of a pinch then this is a good alternative. I personally witnessed a
weld done this way and it held for a full half day of trail ridin and it was
still together when she was drove to the garage for a better fix.
If you are looking to do more than an emergent repair then I would go with a
good generator /  welder combo. I have mine on wheels for use in the shop (not
used much since I got that Mig welder) but when needed it just wheels over to
the lift and goes in the truck trailer or back of tractor.
