Marc,
Sorry about the loss of your brother-in-law. It is tragic to survive the initial
accident only to develop an infection. Thanks for the web link. I do agree with
most of the recommendations.
Staph is everywhere. Not just in hospitals but at home in your car. in the
workplace and in our soil. Staph Aureus can be found on many surfaces even on
raw lettace. Unfortunately due to overuse of antibiotics we have developed
resistant strains of Staph Aureus, called Methacillin resistant Staphlococcus
Aureus (AKA: MRSA pronounced Marsa). MRSA can be killed but not with your
garden variety antibiotics. MARSA is not only in hospitals (but if you think
about it that is where the sick people are and very suseptable to any pathogen)
it is endemic in our population. About 90% of the "spider bites" that I see
are actually skin infections that culture out to be MARSA. As the rate of Meth
use climbs I am seeing tremendous amounts of MARSA infections in the Meth
community.
MRSA is very contageous and difficult to treat.
The number one way to stop the spread. WASH your hands and use Alcholol gel.
Marc thanks for the reminder and once again I am sorry for your loss
Tod.
