I ran into a similar problem with one of those "Lord of the Rings" swords a
friend is trying to repair- the handle was lose and he twisted the tang off
abt 1" from the blade. It's a 1/4" round rod that was welded to the short
flat stub. It appears to be screwed into a brass handle. If we heat it enough
to unscrew it, the chrome plating is likely to flake off. I think there is a
way to remove chrome by electrolysis then it can be re-chromed, plated, etc.
What kind of metal is the guard on your project? I assume it is steel. If
pot metal, forget it. You could bead blast it.....

Subject: [TheForge] Chrome removal
Greetings,
I have been asked to weld a broken rig (guard) on a rapier (sword0.
The
guard is removable but it is chromed. I know enough to have a fan blowing
behind me to take the fumes away and have the exhausst fan going full blast.
My question is this: Is there a way to remove the chrome from the whole rig
other than burning it off? Can I rechrome it? If I can't rechrome it, I will
have to polish and then use some blueing. Polishing it on the inside of the
rig is going to be a pain....I could tumble it....
Suggesetions?
