[TheForge] pure iron wire?

Try, the coat hangers if you want, but they are not low carbon, more like 
junk 1045 so they have some strength.  I still suggest the soft 16 gauge tie 
wire as your best bet.  All quality building supply houses should have it at 
low cost and in good unrusted shape.
