With a rare earth magnet, you will be able to feel the attraction of
the magnet to the wall board nail. Wall board nails have a large
head, and rare earth magnets are incredibly strong, although they may
not "stick", the attraction will be obvious.
Is the oak really 1/2" thick? That is unusual for a wall, it is even
unusual for a floor. Regardless of how the oak is attached you may
consider just hanging the copper from the wall. The oak, if it is
1/2" thick, will be as strong as the stud.
