I just did this last night to mount a flat screen television to a wall: 
if you have access to rare earth magnets, pass them over the wall and 
they will "stick" to the sheet rock nails. if you can get two to stick, 
you will have a line. 
 
You can get small rare-earth magnets at radio shack, but then you could 
also buy a "stud-finder".

Do you think the rare earth magnets will detect nail heads through 1/2" 
oak and wall board.
