I am using coke, a 9" round pot with a cave and the metal above the
height of the pot, "deep fire". Clinkers have been removed. I am doing
better after watching Blacksmith Journal tape 2 , basket handle and the
channel scroll demonstration....

Practice and more practice.......

Thanks to all
lynn

Wielding is something you do learn best by doing. Instead of light blows
I
like to say "you thunk it" by think you strike and then press the work.
Your
blow has a pause in the down stroke. Red is mostly to cold for your
first
weld. The only person I've seen weld in "red" is Bob Patrick. Most weld
closer to the white range. You work is going to shrink by the amount of
airspace that is at your weld the joint ling should almost disappear.
There
will be a faint line but if it is a black line. Not a "almost the same
color
as the work" line then you DON'T have a weld. Hope this helps

Hello
Am having a difficult time seeing what is happening when welding, I
think I have it figured out, keeping the scarf clean is a requirement,
heat to red, wire brush and flux.

The books all mention strike lightly when joining and hit harder as you
continue...So what am I to see as I hit lightly, and what visual clues
that it is now time to strike harder..

Is there a detailed description available?

Thank you
lynn
