Justin,
It is good to be comforted. I too believe that the universe is self correcting,
but I'll bet on the humble germ rather than global warming or the Big Rock.

"Therefore, the
louder they shout, the more they will lose credibility with the majority. I
believe my own view is typical of that majority; we no longer trust the
messenger. "
One of the profoundly satisfying aspects of natural laws is that they are
utterly indifferent to whether or not we believe in them. This gives me a
comforting feeling that the universe will proceed appropriately without us. No
one will have to vote for global warming if it is a correct model, they'll just
get to fry anyway.
But more seriously, this debate like so many seems to be getting off track (I
know it's already off topic!). The emphasis on the agenda of the messengers is
an example of how everything is assumed to be political, or at least assumed to
be a matter of opinion. It used to be that there was a consensus that there was
such a thing as "reality" even though we might disagree about specifics. But
now, reality is cast aside in favor of examining the perspective of the speaker.
The speaker's bias is certainly worthy of consideration, but it has become the
ONLY consideration, and that point we better recognize that our day is past...
