I think you hit on another part of it there. Most ABANA members and
blacksmiths are not full time professional smiths and really don't care
about a conference unless it's in their back yard. I would like to attend
conferences, but Seattle was the only one I made it to because in real life
I'm a database administrator. Being located near the geographic center of
the 'smiths I think is more important than the geographic center of the USA.
