[TheForge] Tripods for outdoor cooking.

Hi there. I was out a few days and just now found your email.
I use hot roll for most everything.
Reasons:
A. Hot roll is cheaper than cold roll. Cold roll goes through an
extra pass in the squeezers.
B. Cold roll is more accurate in dimension, but I don't care in
this instance.
C. Hot roll already has that good looking hot roll/been in the fire
a bit appearance due to hot scale.
D. Hot roll doesn't rust as quickly it seems.
Note that though it is "hot roll," that there is some benefit in running
it through the forge (getting it orange hot again) before bending, if
you intend on bending it cold. I have one of those harbor freight
cheapie "Hosfeld" type of benders (it's what I can afford and I need to
do those type bends). I can tell easily if a piece of 1/2" has been in
the fire or not. The table (loaded down with the welder, chop saw, two
stumps, and sometimes the wife<G>) tends to lift up one of it's legs
like a dog at a fire hydrant when I bend un-re-heated.
I have sold a fair number (I guess maybe 30-35 or so in the last 8 years
or so) of the 3/8" square 4' long ones. I have sold (I guess) a like
number of 5' 1/2" square ones as well. I always have an assortment so
that people can look and feel. I like to fold them up parallel and hand
them to them so that they can feel the size and heft. The 1/2" are
heavier, but the 3/8" x 4' is nice for campfires.
I would say this. Make one out of 1/2 and one out of 3/8. Take them
both to your customers. See what they prefer. It's my thinking that
people that want a short tripod aren't really wanting something Mac
truckish<G>. People that want a big tripod are cooking a feast or
hanging a cauldron.
Let us know how your customers like.
Also, remember that a tripod isn't a tripod without something to hang
from it. I include an S hook (the length of your choice, and if I don't
have the right length, you can watch me make it for you) with each
tripod purchase.
Questions ask<G>. Even direct if you wish. There are usually many
answers, but which are appropriate for your customers and/or market are
not the same ones that are appropriate for mine, not necessarily anyway.
All the Best
