Yeah, if you're trying to lock down your system, you really should
start from scratch and re-install again,
if it is windows. Depending on how "crufty" things are already.
Basically, you back up your email and bookmarks,
and documents, as you normally would (should!!).
Oh, Vista!!! Crap, jump overboard!!! Just kidding.... it's about the
same as other windows.
So backup, and then restore from those backups, but as the other user,
then once it is restored
in the new location, you can delete stuff from the Admin account.
If you're already too entrenched for this, or have no way to actually
export/backup your real data to CD,
maybe the ticket is to just logout and let everyone else use a guest
account -- ie, don't leave it logged into
Admin, but keep using it yourself.... if you're not, well, having
computing accidents and making trouble for
yourself, you should be okay. Websurfing vulnerabilities, and also
virus/worm stuff, are a bit worse, since
if you get infected it has access to the ENTIRE computer then.
Definately stop using IE/explorer as much as possible.
Download the Firefox web browser, getfirefox.com and I'll also suggest
plugins like AdBlock Plus and the FilterSet.G updater,
there is also a flashblocker and other safety-for-browsing things.
The web is like hot metal,
using a glove or tongs, and your anvil may just get an STD, if you blink.
heh heh,
ben
PS - When I say backup, I mean get the actual data of your email onto
a CD. I don't really want to find out what crap M$ has
included to make backups easier for people now. If you're using
Outlook, I'll suggest Thunderbird as well... if you only use webmail
then you can ignore the email component. Like I mentioned, you may
get better results by "exporting" something, and/or finding the
actual files of emails, they used to be in an "Application Data"
folder in 98-XP...
