crosshairs to point of impact.

yeah i would have said the same thing and done the same though i have
not done any shooting in years (partly cos of the prohibitive cost of
being a shooter here in Australia now).
most people don't have any real understanding of shooting and as a
result are afraid to try to do anything (including sighting in)
themselves. it is a dangerous sport only if the nut behind the gun
doesn't know and follow SOP and SSP. the gun itself is inanimate until
someone picks it up.
