Aubrey,
At least one blacksmith suggested starting students out learning to hammer by
using clay. There are also very soft metals like tin that a child could practice
on without heat.

My granddaughter will be 4 in August. Too young for the hot stuff, but she
likes to hammer nails, saw wood with a hand saw, etc. Her favorite is digging
holes in the sand with the kid-sized shovel I got her at the hardware store.
She is learning some shop safety wearing ear muffs & eye protection. She has a
really big head for her age, so fit is not so much of a problem.

Lon,
Wayne Goddard wrote about a triple quench & temper for 5200 in "Blade" a
year or so ago. Have you seen the article?
Kids: How old is your daughter? My 4 yo Gt'granddaughter wants to "make the
stuff Paw Paw makes". I made her a hammer and she can drive nails really
well. I have some super soft aluminum rod and I'm thinking about letting her
play with that cold....I need to find some good eye protection for a small
head. Her Princess glasses look a bit flimsey. No, I haven't bought her a
30-06 yet; she gets a saddle for the horses first.
