It sounds like you need an "elephant trunk".
A portable unit could be made from a shop vac with inlet and outlet connections. Run the outlet through a 2"+ out a window or at least 10' out a door. Connect the inlet to a 3"-4" hose or dryer exhaust tubing, with maybe a "funnel" on the intake. Put the intake near where the smoke is being generated. Use only when necessary and it'll save the A/C.
Permanent installations are also possible, but may not be worth it for occasional need.

At Jeff's shop there is a large window unit at one end and an exhaust fan
over the welding table. It works pretty well until someone uses the plasma
cutter on painted steel at which time I go outside 'til the smoke clears.
The forges draw well so there is a minimum of smoke under normal conditions.

How many of you out there have your shops air
conditioned, because I would like to know who you do
it. I need to have a door open while I am forging and
more likely than not I am forging outside because of
the heat build up in my shop building.
