I use mostly smaller stock and keep it in a loft  over the shop. I found that 
making three stands of 6" sq, like below, allows you  to keep a surprising 
large quantity of stock in them. Most squares made of 1/2"  but I used any scrap 
around. Small shop so everything is cut to 10' lengths.  Most widths are 1/4, 
1/2, 3/4 and 1"
