Been musing about this problem too.
Seems like stainless alloy dies  or die faces would have 
significantly less heat transfer.
Titanium alloy might be even better and with the abrupt phase 
change and not suffer from much surface distortion due to 
localized heat.
As Bruce points out, the right sort of high tech ceramic might be 
the perfect medium, since impact isn't the issue.
