Planers are great tools--basically a shaper but the bed moves instead of the
tool. In today's world they have the same limitation as a shaper, they are
slow, single point machine tools. In a shop today no one wants to pay
someone to stand around and watch a planer or shaper run. But in a one or
two man shop they can be great tools because you can be doing something else
while they run. (Modern milling machines with carbide cutters will use more
horsepower and can remove a lot more metal per minute.) My old machine
designer boss once said nothing equals a planer for giving you a long true
flat surface. For the price, if in working shape it could be a great tool.
