I finally got some bamboo samples made up that I really like.  You can see

Cut and paste the links into your browser to see them.  The bronze version 
and the first steel version are made with forging and then welding.  The 
third is all forging.  I like the forged version best for the steel.  For 
the bronze, I still like the other method.
