I believe in Europe the use of a 'fire mop' is common. Seems the
sprinkling can is more an American version of coal fire control.

Bruce,
I saw smiths at a recent conference using a rag on the end of a stick
to dampen their fires. They would dip the rag in the quench tub then
run the rag over the coal. Seems like it would prevent excess water
from dripping through the fire, while still applying some water to the
top.
