I saw one several years ago, perhaps at Mt Vernon(?). The drive rather than weights was a prop in the chimney. As the fire got hotter or cooler the rotation changed accordingly. The shaft going to the prop had a gear at the bottom end that contacted another gear on the spit turning the vertical rotation to horizontal. Simple and elegant. Mike Graf
