The spits we have here at the Shelburne Museum mount on the mantel of
the fireplace. The cast frame has two shafts, one horizontal the other
vertical, a worm gear is on the horizontal, and the vertical a spur gear
engaging that worm, on the top of the vertical is a fan, adjustable in
diameter for speed control. From the horizontal shaft a drive rope
provides power to the spit as well as the rope for the weight to drive
all.

hello bruce;
would you have any further urls for spit jacks plans or drawings?
i have googled for 'spit jack' and just find various pages with various
photographs of spit jacks. it is difficult to see how one worked and how
is drove the spit to rotate.
