The animation was jerky for me too, but I get the idea. I can see why it was never used in any practical application.

So, Aubrey, did you get the animation? It was kinda jerky for me and
didn't loop well in my player.
The right-angle bent elements slide in the two rotating parts. As the
drive wheel rotates, it forces the driven wheel to rotate via the bent
rods and the rods slide in and out of the two wheels to accomodate.
I think you'd want to keep such a thing lubricated real well. Imagine
what would happen if one of the rods siezed up at 400 RPM driving a
25# Little Giant hammer. :-)
But one of these days I'm going to have to make one for no particular
purpose, just 'cause it's cool.
