Hello

Why would it not be a good idea to add a screen, as metal window screen
, between the mixing chamber and the burn area? This is used in the
boating world to keep flames from going back down the fill pipe..

Happens all the time.  The mixture just has to move faster than the
flame front so the fire doesn't travel  back up into the mixing chamber.
