Peter,  Have you tried welding deep drawing steel - using TIG and using soft 
tie wire for the rod.  (tie wire used to tie concrete rebar.)   It is close 
to the same steel as deep drawing steel.  Using this for rod your parent 
metal must be very clean because there are no additives in the tie wire --  
just plain low carbon steel.
