[TheForge] RE: Stick rod vs mig & forged welds

Terry,

The term for that technique is "forged weld" per Dr. Ed Crane; weld it, heat
the whole area and forge it. I made a tapered 5 rod basket twist for a
candle holder and wound up re-welding the ends with a torch. The next one I
just forge welded which was a hellova lot quicker

BTW, the welding book says "don't weld with a cutting torch", but that's
what I had to use and it worked fine. It is a pretty small cutting torch but
the welds were neat and almost invisible.

   Larry,
I have noticed that Mig welded then hammered left an undercut or
inclusive like zone around the outside HAZ (heat affected zone).
However, I regularly TIG joints, especially on small joints and a
little hammer work blends the weld almost invisibly. It rivals the
cosmetics of a good forge weld. That is my opinion.
