	He said not more than about 1/16 or so.  I don't think the grinder will 
do the trick.  Splitting a rail like this is similar to doing stone, 
where you strike along the cutting line with a flat edged chisel (it's 
not called a "chisel" IIRC, but I don't remember what its proper name 
is).  I have heard this called "putting the message into the stone". 
Methinks the sharp corner at the bottom of the chisel mark is necessary 
to act as a point of stress concentration, facilitating the failure. 
But give it a shot - I might be wrong.
