James,
That's a good suggestion. But, I have already tightened the ram gibs. They was quite a bit of slop in the ram when I first got the hammer. But, now, after adjusting, they move smoothly throughout their range with almost no slop at all. I'm thinking spring tension may be one key to my problem, but I'm not sure.
Today it is 24*F and icy here in Norman (not too far north of you). I got some more K1 for my heater so I may get out to the shop this afternoon.

Moloch,
I have a 25 # Moloch, when it does the bang/tap, I tighten the hammer
guides (the parts that are on each side that the parts slide in). They
always work loose after a while. Or, depending on the size work I am
doing, I will raise /lower the hammer on the flywheel. Good luck.
