Jerry,

What about using a screw/crank tongue jack..., like used for lifting 
the hitch tongue on machinery?  You could probably find some in  a 
salvage bone yard for old farm machinery, or new in a farm supply 
store like Fleetfarm.

Following the English Wheel thread, I got to thinking about using one 
of these for the pressure foot on a home made English wheel.
