Thanks Chuck, learned a few things there.  BTW the guy that carries the 
"Bubble Alumina" is Darren Ellis
www.elliscustomknifeworks  He sure has good prices on Kaowool and other 
forge type stuff, including he builds several models of forges.  I'm in no 
way part of his business (well, maybe I am, I've spent enough there :o), but 
he has lots of accessories for building forges and the like.  May be worth 
looking at.
The one thing I didn't understand in your post was the term "S shell"??
