You attach an ordinary 2x12 to the top of the log and use that to guide 
your first cut.  Thereafter you use the previously cut surface.  I have 
seen a video of a similar unit in action, but have not operated one 
myself.  It is on my Fabrication to do list.   The higher end version I 
have seen has a modified cutting bar that allows for a tbar handle to be 
attached there and a guard for the tip of the blade.  No stab or plunge 
cuts are needed for this, so it doesn't get in the way, but allows a 
second person to help guide the cut and provide leverage.  I think it 
would be  worthwhile addition.
