Years ago I investigated the vandalism of a new school under construction.
The thieves hauled away several truck loads of aluminum grating. When I
found out who was buying it, I told the insurance company I could confirm it
with a visit to the scrap yard with a camera. The company did not want to
incur the cost of additional investigation. They had the same attitude with
several arsons including houses, vehicles, and large sail boats; tried to
handle it by phone. (Call the yard and ask if there is any stolen stuff
there?), um... duh. The sheriff's dept in that county couldn't find an
elephant in a phone booth; the scrap yard had large rolls of 1" copper
tubing, large buss bars 4"x1/2" x 4', and large rolls of copper ground wire,
all brand new. They don't ask; don't tell.

Charles,

I have forgot how much copper there is out there, a
well as aluminum. I spent a few years as a pole
climber for Ma Bell and for what became Time Warner.
Lots of copper and aluminum on those poles and in the
ground. Every pot pole has a ground, so easy pickings
there and pulling a ground rod can be done really
quick with an old fashion car jack.

But out here in BFE Ohio, no one notices their phone
does work til daylight, after the thieves have dropped
two span of phone trunk. It took them not very long
and they knew what they were doing. 

I just want to know who the middle man is to fence
these things or they probaby drive up to one of the
ports where the ships are.
