All metal prices, energy prices etc are sky rocketing to to support
the exponential growth in China and India.
If it wasn't for the HUGE trade deficit with China it wouldn't be as
bad.
All of those ships full of Mal-Wart, etc. cheap goods have to go back
to the motherland full.
Full of coal, scrap iron, raw timber, untanned animal hides, COPPER,
and anything else needed to drive economic growth.
In my day job I am responsible for the operation and maintenance of
the utility plants for the University of Cincinnati.
When I started in that role in 2002, we were paying about $28 a ton
for compliance grade low sulfur coal.
Today we are paying $121 per ton!!!
Natural gas was $3.50 / MCF in 2002, it is not hovering around $8,
etc. etc.
We are rapidly becoming a third world country.
We used to export finished goods and import raw materials.
Now we import finished goods and export raw materials.............the
classic definition of a third world country.
