  2 things;
1...when you weld that sucker ( er, roller) up...it's gonna 
wiggle all over the place. Welds shrink. Plan on it...maybe add 
some knock out braces and clamps?
  You were ambiguous about scale on this roller...
A jewelry type roller can be used for hot metal as well..it's a 
matter of scale...and touch.
Either make small reductions  per heat or reduce the billet down 
to the appropriate size with hammer and anvil first.
This is going uphill against the general rule to use the 
strongest tool that will do the work well.
Use it in a tender hurry!...pete f
