DonP> Anyone know what shingled iron is?

In Ironworks on the Saugus [1] there's mention of "shingling the
loop". It's the first step after removing the hot mass of iron from
the finery: sledge hammering it on an iron plate to "consolidate it
and remove surface charcoal" before (or possibly including) taking it
to the big helve hammer to be forged into a "bloom". There's a
footnote referencing some obscure Massachusetts court documents.

There's also an explanation of the terms "anchony" and "mocket head"
but nothing about the etymology of the words.
