Do you mean an air hammer or a treadle hammer? Rotation of the head would not be an issue on a treadle hammer, but possibly could be on an air hammer.
There are at least three in-line treadle hammers I know of. The Big Lick has a 90# ram and about a 9" stroke. I don't know about Clay Spencer's hammer ram weight, but the stroke is probably in excess of 12". On both of those, you fight the springs, but I can't tell you the force you leg exerts.
The third is my design, the Grasshopper. See www.grasshopperhammer.com . The ram weighs 55#, but the effective weight is closer to 75#. The stroke is at least 22". You don't fight the springs to use this hammer, so it will be somewhat easier to use than the others. How much easier will depend a lot on what kind of use you put it to.

Hello
Am looking into building an inline hammer and at first look these
questions come to mind....
What is the usual poundage of the head?
What would be the typical force required by the operator to operate the
hammer?
If the head is round, what is used to restrict rotation of the head?
If you were to build one, what features would you build in?
Thank you
lynn
