There are two basic types of rail: Line rail and Yard
rail.
Line rail is generally 1085-1095.
Yard rail usually has Vanadium or Manganese as a
significant component and is harder to use in a small
shop environment. These alloys have serious limits on
heat and time before bad things start happening.
Yard rail is usualy marked with a "Y", "V", or "M". (As
I recall)
I haven't looked in some years so I may be off and Yard
rail may well have changed since as well. Then of
course different manufacturers have different alloys to
attain the specs.

Wrought iron is.
