Is the stump too close to civilization to use explosives? How big is it? I
cleared the cypress stumps out of Lake Talquin for a swimming/diving area
for the Wallwood Boy Scout camp with plain ol 60% dynamite. Back then it was
easy to buy dynamite from your friendly hardware store and C-4 military
surplus in Anniston, Ala. There are explosives still readily available but
you have to know what you're doing when you mix them. Or saw the stump in
the shape of an anvil, have a hammer-in and an anvil shoot with Pyrodex as
is done at some of our conferences.

I remember pulling fence posts with the tractor. We
used a chain over a large rim. With the chain looped
around the post as low as possible. Took seconds for a
post but they don't have roots! :)
Recently I had to remove a tree for a footer. Dig and
cut. Long labor, but it had to be done.
