There are (NY, NJ  anyway) subsidies available for installing solar panels 
which make them not  quite free but cheap. Both my in-laws and parents have done 
this and now have  household electricity bills in the single digits. Some 
months they even get  negative bills (selling excess power back to the grid).  
The installation  is small, one is on a roof, the other in a side yard and can 
be added to later  if you want more power.. 
Just a  thought.
