I rarely have any trouble igniting a coal forge. IMHO the biggest
enemy is a small or shallow fire pot. In a good fire pot 3-4 sheets of
newspaper rolled up tight, set-a-fire, placed in the bottom of the pot with
coal to follow and a gentle air supply is sufficient.
I guided a new smith at the Portland, Indiana tractor show last
month start a pure coke fire with no fire pot - his forge was clayed flat
right up to the air gate - using news paper and several corn cobs that were
handy.

If coal ignites so easily when no one is looking, why is it so damn
hard to get going in my forge?
   A watched coal never burns????

It is I who formed the blacksmith,
who fans the flame into a fire and
fashions a weapon fit for it's work.
