Coal mines do get fires in amongst their heaps now and then particularly
after rain if it gets hot afterwards. I used to work as a cleaner on coal
mines and they are always monitoring for any hot spots in the piles and also
moisture content.

Not that I know anything about this, but it seems to me that if coal
were at all prone to spontaneous combustion then we'd have more coal
mine fires... After all there are millions/billions of pounds of it just
laying around in mines. If it has to do with the oxygen then you'd think
open-pit coal mines would be burning up all the time.

Does anyone know it these fires are caused by the coal spontaneously
combusting; or sparks or some other cause?
